n Year 7 (Key Stage 3 / S1 across England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence), the Algebra strand introduces formal algebraic thinking as a powerful tool to generalize arithmetic and model numerical relationships.
Key topics studied include understanding algebraic notation (such as 3ab, a/b, and x^2), collecting like terms to simplify linear expressions, and substituting positive integers into simple expressions and formulae.
Students learn to expand single brackets, form linear expressions from practical word problems, and solve one-step and two-step linear equations using inverse operations.
Additionally, students explore algebraic sequences, generate terms from function machines, describe term-to-term rules, and plot linear graphs on coordinate grids using equations such as y = x + c and y = ax.
